If the main purpose for riding your road bike is for commuting, it is important to have the right amount of comfort for being off your bike as well as a stiff enough sole for good pedal efficiency. Shoes for touring or commuting are best used with a pedal that does not have a clip.
If you are a dedicated road cyclist and the bike is mainly used for racing and training, then a true road shoe is the best choice. These shoes have a very firm sole and are not very comfortable to wear off-bike, however they are typically designed for any speed and are aerodynamic by hugging the foot with a narrow profile. The correct fitting road shoe should hold the heel in place comfortably and be sturdy and lightweight.
